In celebration of Women’s History Month, we plan to highlight some of the influential women in our organization. The theme for Women’s History Month in 2023 was “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories.” This theme reminds us of the incredible impact that women have had on our world, not only in the present but also throughout history. Throughout March, we shared highlights of the women of Hall Render this month.
Marianne Marshall, legal administrative assistant, shared that while looking back on her family history, she discovered many strong female ancestors.
“We all have strong women in our DNA, and we owe them a debt of gratitude for the hardships they endured, paving the way for the lives and freedoms we enjoy today.”
Melissa Markey, an attorney in our Denver office, shared her experience of becoming a lawyer.
“As a young lawyer, particularly one coming from a prior career, it is hard to accept the learning curve, which in health law is particularly steep. When I started practicing, I felt that learning curve acutely. I was lucky to have supportive colleagues who were willing to teach me, and I was proactive in identifying topics that interested me and seeking authoritative information. I tried to learn not only about legal issues but also sought an understanding of the technical and ethical issues that arise. Once I had a basic understanding, I would volunteer to write an article; by the time I was finished with the project, I had a solid grasp of the issues. This helped me build confidence and develop a practice that remains interesting and challenging.”
Angela Woodlee, Paralegal at Hall Render shared her experience.
“One of my favorite things about Hall Render is the people I get to interact with on a daily basis. I work with brilliant and experienced professionals who motivate, challenge, inspire and support me both professionally and personally. During Women’s History Month, and every day, I am thankful for the women that have been (and continue to be) a vital part of my life.”
Jennifer Fry, Principal Advisor with Hall Render Advisory Services, shared how she helps further the culture of the organization.
“Providing guidance and helping younger professionals, especially women, is important to the long-term success of not only our organizations, but of our communities.”
Kathryn Jones, an attorney in our Detroit office, shared her thoughts on the challenges women face.
“During Women’s History Month, I reflect on the women mentors who guided me during my career and offered advice– both professional and personal. Being a working mom with two young children can sometimes be challenging. Over the years, I’ve learned the value of planning ahead and asking for help and support, when necessary. I would not be able to devote the time to my clients in providing innovative solutions to better their workplaces and defending employment disputes on their behalf if it were not for the support and sometimes extra help from my husband and my parents.”
Karen Gifford, Chief Financial Officer at Hall Render, shared:
“As a woman, I think about how we often wear two important hats: We manage and develop our own families while also successfully managing and developing teams and projects outside of that family. It is an enormous privilege and a great responsibility—one that deserves to be honored. Many important women have carved a path for us to be able to do what we do.”
Heather Goode, Director of Business Development, shared that from the beginning, she has been surrounded by family and friends who elevate women.
“From my mom, who marched for the Equal Rights Amendment when I was in grade school and instilled in me that women have a voice, to my two sisters who actively support and promote opportunities for women in their respective careers, to all the women who have influenced and help shape me throughout my life, I will always be grateful and am proud to be the woman I am today. Happy Women’s History Month!
Rita Kaur Cooper, an attorney in our DC office, shared that the genuine appreciation for the whole person is what she enjoys most about working at Hall Render.
“Embracing the whole person ensures that we take time to really get to know each other both personally and professionally, which makes for a more rewarding work environment and fosters inclusion. I truly believe that diversity in experience, background and perspective strengthens our relationships, and I’m so thankful that when I ‘show up’ to work, I can be my authentic self.”
Regan Tankersley, an attorney in our Indianapolis office, says the people are her favorite aspect of Hall Render.
“The practice of law can be very challenging, and I can’t imagine how much more difficult it would be without the support of colleagues who genuinely care about each other and strive to work together as a team to provide the best service and experience for our clients.”
Carolina Wirth, an attorney in our DC office, enjoys forming partnerships with her clients and providing them with strategic advice for their specific needs.
“Being part of a firm with a clear and focused mission that sincerely values each of its members. I am thankful to have found a home here and for the wonderful group of talented and diverse colleagues I get to work with every day.”
